Noteworthy Spring 2015

Enter article text here: On October 24, 2014, our firm was honored by Children’s Aid & Family Services at its Food and Wine fundraising event. It was a special tribute, and most of us were able to turn out for a great evening. Being honored by Children’s Aid & Family Services was especially sweet for us, because we have enjoyed an association with this agency that goes back almost 30 years, from even before Children’s Aid & Adoption Society and Family Services of Ridgewood merged into a single entity.

Speaking of CAFS, warm wishes to Bob Jones, longtime CEO who recently retired and will be replaced by Board Member, Bergen County “Jack-of-all-Trades”, Jerry Binney, most recently practicing law at DeCotiis, Fitzpatrick, LLP.

Partners, Tom Wells, Stuart Liebman and Jim Jaworski, all continue as active Rotarians and, as this issue goes to print, Mark Balian is searching for a Rotary home. We expect great things from Mark. He will be an asset to any club he joins. Also on Rotary, we want to brag about our connection through Tom, and pride in the fact that Peter Wells, a long term client and friend of our firm, will begin service as the District Governor of District 7490 on July 1, 2015.

Those familiar with our firm know that a substantial part of our practice is in Land Use representation before the Planning Boards and Boards of Adjustments throughout Bergen County and northern New Jersey. We do occasionally find ourselves on the other side of the dais, however, as Stuart Liebman has been the Glen Rock Board of Adjustment and Planning Board attorney, ably assisted by Jim Delia and Spencer Rothwell. We have proudly served in this capacity for more than 23 years. “Congratulations” are due to Jim Delia who, in July, 2014, was appointed the Board Attorney for the Board of Adjustment in Hawthorne.

It would not be a Noteworthy column without a quick mention of Haiti, where Jim Delia will be going back for his 9th year as the coordinator of the Ridgewood YMCA’s Soccer Program, and Tom Wells led a group in September, 2014 (pictured very dirty at the end of a work day) to build the fourth Container YMCA in Caracol. The new community center was dedicated on March 22, 2015 and Tom was back, cleaned up, for the ribbon cutting inauguration ceremony.

On the personal front, we are happy to report that Mark Balian happily married Adrianna Angeles, and the newlyweds are reported to be enjoying that blessed first year of marriage. Tom and Carol Wells are pleased to announce their daughter, Ciera, will be marrying Dave Jones this summer, and Stuart and Arlene Liebman have equally happy news as son, Joel, will be marrying Caitlin Greenbaum. Stuart and Arlene’s son, Matt, pleaded his successful defense of his doctoral thesis, thus, the whole family is looking forward to his doctoral degree in Psychology this spring.

“Congratulations” to Ken Porro and his Lyndhurst High School mock trial team for another successful year. This has been Ken’s fourth year of volunteering his time toward this worthy cause. Our future lawyers?

Our partner, Stuart Liebman, is currently serving for yet another return engagement as Co-President of Temple Beth Sholom in Fair Lawn. On September 4, 2014, Of Counsel, Lisa Aljian, co-produced a Celebrity Cook-off in hometown River Edge at the local Farmers’ Market. The culinary battle featured Lisa’s husband, Mayor Sandy Moscaritolo, and Celebrity Chef Anton Testino. It was a huge success and a great way for the community to come together to support their local farm growers. We look forward to more successful events in the future.
